The value in the current reading location is what the firmware uses to open the book to the correct location. The format of the string is different for epubs and kepubs. But, it is basically the file within the book plus the location inside the file. For unread books, it is empty. When you finish a book, it gets set to the first page of the book.

The percent read is exactly that. The firmware doesn't use it except as a way to display how far through the book you are.

If you want to restore the reading position in the book, you need the current reading location. If you just want to record what books you have read, then the percent read is enough.
