Rename the broken DL (if you still have it) to x.gz and try to extract it with gzip. If this works re-calculate the md5.

DO NOT attempt to decompress it.

If you must see the contents, use KindleTool.
Keep in mind, it is a signed file, once you take it apart, you can not put it together again.
So only do that to a spare copy of the file.

If using an OS that auto opens "known" files -
change your configuration to NOT open "known" files.

Nowhere in the directions do I tell people to make any kind of change to the update_*.bin file.
Use it as is, if it passes the md5 validation.

Once you get rid of this serious case of PEBCAK, it will all work as documented.
