The side of the screen or the edges?
Back in the PDA era my preferred reader was the HP JORNADA with an edge mounted rubber rocker switch. My thumb rested right on it so all I needed was to increase the pressure slightly. No real movement needed.

There's also the Kindle Four (?) With the pivoting paging buttons on the side. Similar results: easy to grasp, easy to page but only when you want to.

Edit: it was the K3.
