I do two things with my highligts and annotations.

To read them easily on the computer later, I use the function to import the annotation to a separate column in Calibre

To be able to reload them back on the device in case of device failure, I simply copy the annotations files that is stored seperately in the Digital edition folder on the device. As a backup that I put somewhere. If the device brakes down or I buy another Kobo reader I can just put them back along with the books. Important to use the same file structure though.
