@robko @FizzyWater thanks for the info! I also almost didn't scratch my Kindle 4, my single reader for 5 years, but here is how I scratched it in the end: as I synced it via the microUSB cable to the PC, as I disconnected the cable, the metallic microUSB end whipped back onto the screen, and there's a dent. It wouldn't happen this way if it were a Lightning cable, just saying.
From frequent use of the middle button because of the dictionary, the middle button area also looks horribly worn, unlike other Kindles of the same age I spot in the wild, but that's a different story.
All in all it seems to be, my best bet would be the Kindle again from monopolist Amazon with its questionable company policies and closed file format. OK, I'm fine with that! I really wanted to give other players a try.
