This has happened to me on PC's & netbooks running Windows 7 and USB2 devices & ports. I find that if I remove the drives linked to the USB ports thus forcing Windows to reinstall the drivers and copy smaller amounts of data the problem occurs less frequently. I also noticed on some occasions it was linked to a specific file type, so I copy these individually. Also, I don't think its specifically related to Explorer as I use Multi Commander to copy data.
I'm inclined to think that the problem is more likely to be with the USB device and/or port than the PC or laptop.
