My phone has a plastic back, but I still prefer the silicone shell around it. Not to protect it, but because I prefer the feeling of it over the bare device. I personally am not one that is sold on the current hot thing: as thin a device as you can get. I prefer some thickness. And a silicone shell will add that, without blocking fast access to the screen.

For a reader, I agree with you, a book-style cover is mainly to protect the screen from scratches when transporting the device.
