Had the phone's back been made of metal or plastic, I'd have used it without a cover whatsoever. I've never dropped, scratched, or damaged a smartphone. An e-reader, with a 6+ inch screen that is not protected by something like Gorilla glass, is another matter; I always, and only, use book-style covers for those.

My phone has a plastic back, but I still prefer the silicone shell around it. Not to protect it, but because I prefer the feeling of it over the bare device. I personally am not one that is sold on the current hot thing: as thin a device as you can get. I prefer some thickness. And a silicone shell will add that, without blocking fast access to the screen.
For a reader, I agree with you, a book-style cover is mainly to protect the screen from scratches when transporting the device.
