Its not very long time period so these readers die often?
The thing most likely to cause premature death of your ereader (of either of these brands, or others) is breaking the screen. If you treat it gently, use a cover, make sure it is not twisted/bent/subjected to presure or impact forces or temperature extremes, the next likely limiting factor (assuming you don't drop a non-waterproof device in the bath) is battery lifetime.

(Most) Kobos have the advantage of having an internal SD card that can be removed and replaced with a new one should it fail out of warranty. Kindle has the advantage of a customer service department that will often offer a modest discount on a new Kindle should the device fail out of warranty.
