When you download the .acsm file and then the epub linked to it, your ebook comes with a drop dead date. For instance, I've got my preference set to 7 days (the minimum the library supports) with the maximum being 21 days. If I don't return the ebook before the expiration date, it is automagically returned aka made available for another patron to download. There is a process for renewing an ebook within 48 hours of the expiry but I've never bothered with doing so since a week is more than long enough for me. I also believe that you can't renew if another patron has put a hold on the ebook.

Not sure what it says about my morality but while I regularly remove DRM from ebooks I purchase, I don't remove DRM from library loans—if I want to keep the ebook, I'll purchase my own copy.
