I hardly ever use 3G on my Kindle to download books but I often use it for access to Wikipedia as I read. I enjoy looking up things as I encounter them while reading and I do it a lot. That's not really a necessity but I'd hate to lose that ability. That's worth the price of 3G to me.
Also on books with a lot of foreign phrases (I read a lot of older novels) I like to use the translation feature and if I'm not at home I need 3G for that.
