I don't read PDFs normally so I can't tell you what else has changed, but I know the
unofficial full-screen mode that people use for ePub and KePub also works for PDF, so you don't need to have the progress indicator taking up screen space if you don't want it.
Edit: I just tested a PDF, one with very wide margins, and found that turning the page doesn't change the zoom level, but does reset the pan position. However there is a firmware patch named `Preserve PDF pan position across page turns` that does what its name suggests, and with that patch applied I can zoom in to crop out the PDF's wide margins and thereafter turn pages without the viewport position changing at all.
