So I can recognise when my toilet needs fixing and I am entitled to criticise the plumber who does a bad job of fixing it, even though I have no idea how to fix it myself.

(Edit: But it is not fair to criticise someone who doesn't claim to be a professional for not meeting professional standards. So to make my point explicit and avoid misunderstandings, it is fair enough for a reader to complain about spelling mistakes in a professionally published book, even if they can't acheive the same standard of spelling themselves. Pointing out spelling mistakes in the complaint doesn't necessarily invalidate that complaint, not even if it is a complaint about spelling.)
... And this case, to extend your comparison, is comparable to someone who recognizes their toilet needs fixing, has no idea how to fix it themselves, and then proceeds to criticize their next-door-neighbor during a casual schmooze, for not knowing how to fix the toilet either.

Reread Katie1's post, and take note of the fact that the target of her criticism was not "professional publishers of SciFi", the target of her criticism was "those idiot, uncultured, illiterate fools who buy and/or read SciFi".

...

Which rings about as hollow as her usual posts, now I think about it. Her claims tend to have more problems than merely spelling errata.

But I wouldn't feel the need to comment, if it weren't for the equally typical hypocrisy involved.
