I suggest doing a factory reset. There have been a occasional device that doesn't connect out of the box, but is OK after the factory reset. If it doesn't connect properly after that, it is probably faulty and you should take it back.

Tried the factory reset twice. The device DOES appear as a drive letter and I can eject it through the 'safe to remove hardware' but I can't use the drive because I get the messages I stated in my original post.
