Firstly, forget about the applications. If Windows doesn't recognise the device properly, none of them can either. They all need the Kobo device to be mounted with a drive letter.

I suggest doing a factory reset. There have been a occasional device that doesn't connect out of the box, but is OK after the factory reset. If it doesn't connect properly after that, it is probably faulty and you should take it back.
