I just saw a thread about using Kobo Utilities plugin -- I'm going to look into that.
If you want to sort the series books together, the only thing you can do is use a plugboard.

There was one or two versions of firmware a long time ago that used the series as part of the title when sorting. The Kobo Utilities plugin can set a series order for collections. But it cheats by changing the date the book was added to the collection into the appropriate order. Then you use the "Date added" sort. But, the sort hasn't worked properly for a while.

Someone here, uses the plugboard to add the series info in the author. That makes the title easier to read and sorting by author groups the books by series within the author.
