Given the flush screen it pretty much has to be capacitve.

I've had a couple of different Kobos (the Mini and the Glo) with IR and one capacitive one (the Aura) and I really never noticed any difference. I wasn't looking for a difference but if there'd been much difference I think I'd have noticed.
