As I much as I have loved reading on kindles in the past, the software platform leaves much to be desired.

Are you downloading straight from Amazon or are you converting?
If the first then yes use Amazon support, if the second then find a forum dedicated to the program you are using.
The software works for what it was designed to do.
It was not designed for the outliers and therefore their customer support cannot help.
