Actually, you're wrong about that. Listings are a major part of what stock exchanges do. Some publicly traded U.S. companies list with the the NYSE, some list with NASDAQ. Others may list with regional exchanges such as the Pacific Stock Exchange.
This is from the NYSE's website:
