To some people, such happens in their early to mid 30's, and it can go *very* quickly.
One day I didn't have any problems (apart from my normal poor eyesight that is), a week later I thought "It looks like I can't focus properly anymore without a lot of effort", and a less than a week after that, I visited my optometrist.
Without glasses, I could still see as normal. (That is... I'm so near sighted that without glasses, I can focus at a subject between 2 and 8 inches away.)
My optometrist determined that my dioptric values had shifted from -9 and -5 to -7 and -3. In less than two weeks... more than half a decade to go until 40.
