Browsing this forum is a pretty good help manual. I read it regularly for just that reason.
Personally, I found Sigil very intuitive. Even the rather radical changes in the 0.9.x version turned out to be no problem once I had a few days free to download it and take it out for a run. I think you do want to download the separate Flight Crew plug-in. It's very useful to check your work as you go along. Plug-ins make me nervous, but Flight Crew just installed itself without a murmur.
You may find that the downloads are confusing because there are so many of them. There's one version for 32 bit Windows and another for 64 bit systems. If you bought your Windows machine in the past five years, it's probably 64 bit, unless like me you had a reason for sticking with 32 bit. Then there's all the stuff about checksums, which I just ignore.
