Given that they said "early first quarter" and that the hardware design (and maybe a batch of hardware) is done, I would say February. It was well known that Bezos dictated the delay due to software (translation: firmware). That means they could have a crapload of hardware just sitting there waiting for the new firmware load, which takes no time at all to do. This batch could solve their backlog problems and get the new version out as well.
In fact, perhaps the new backlog that has developed could be in part due to diversion of screen inventory to production of the Kindle 2 or perhaps a total halt in Kindle 1 production, also due to a switch over to and (firmware caused) stockpiling of Kindle 2?
Sheer speculation but not totally implausible.
In my case, I would like to see it soon and buy a second one for the wife to share books.
