Depending on what you mean:

A real box simple: I use borders and padding to keep the contents away from the lines

Need to control the size and placement:
The box is part of a Div
The contents is inside the div

IMHO the picture of the Box Model at W3C really helps wrap your head around the concept.

Then all you have to do is compromise because those manufactures 'know better' and mucked it up.
