My 87 year old father thinks that when the screen go dark, that's the same as powering off. I've had more that one computer/printer that wouldn't turn on that when I physically visited the site, turn out not to be plugged in. (power strip not turn on is another favorite).

I once went to service a computer that wasn't turning on. The person who took the call asked if the computer was plugged in and was anther socket tried. Both answers were yes. When I got there and diagnosed the problem, it was a bad socket on a power bar. It was not tried in another socket. A totally wasted trip.
