NiLuJe, I assumed a screenshot/frame buffer was taken of the page just before sleep, the overlay then merged, then the image displayed as the screen saver... but from what you said it feels like I'm wrong about that.
If you are never actively 'getting' the current (last) screen, and somehow there is a kindle function that just blits the overlay over the current display, can't we still check what rotation we are in so we know what overlay to use, just before we do anything with the overlay?
I don't really know how the internals work, when the framework is started etc, sorry, but I'm curious.

knc1 - I think covers should remain portrait, at least, there are no display problems with that, just that there definitely is display problem with landscape+last mode. Portrait covers would look ugly in landscape.
