Is there an alternative use for broken e-ink devices that I don't know of?  Can they even be fixed?

It is possible with a little effort and expense to replace the screen. Some might find that worth-while.
If the electronics are dead but not the screen, it might be used to supply a replacement screen.
If the battery is dead, a replacement battery might be obtained.
And if it's an old Kindle, if it can be registered at Amazon, even with a broken screen, it gives an easy way to remove DRM from your books.
