I think the most convenient way to try to adapt chess books should be using FineReader. It can deal with the diagrams like images and the others things as text, even on double-column documents.

I am not sure however how it would cope with figures in algebraic notation though. And there are so many kinds of chess fonts...You can't be happy with Merida font only. Specially on older chess books.

Will follow this thread. Who knows, somebody will find a brilliant solution.
