The external uSD card does mount properly so your suggestion would work especially for those who keep their sideloaded library on the external uSD card. However, while saving to disk and then copying the ebooks to the external uSD is a workaround, you lose the metadata management capability of Calibre and it's plugins.
And no, I don't think doing a factory reset, re-installing the Kobo desktop app, editing random registry entries or any of the other suggestions I've received will do any good. Though the one about placing my ereader on top of my laptop and dancing skyclad widdershins around them at midnight on the night of the new moon did have the benefit of being good for a laugh—the
