Some resellers of Kobo have their devices configured to display ads when (I believe) the device is powered off, and possibly in sleep mode.
This is controlled by the affiliate configured in the configuration file on the device, and is easily changed to a non advertising affiliate.
FNAC is a European reseller who shows ads.
