It should be obvious without a note that you don't want any competition for which firmware version the device is running during the process.

In fact, it was this issue of the device receiving an OTA update during the process that added the big, black, header: "for experienced ... users only".
"experienced users" == people who know the device can OTA update at any time.

Why you see some obvious things mentioned and others not:

For instance you find a "be sure battery is charged" -
because if otherwise, the Kindle hardware might be damaged.

For instance you do not find a "keep Kindle off-line" -
because if otherwise, the person only has to start over with the procedure.

Humans are hard to program but they mostly learn pretty fast.
A person will only try these directions a few times before they figure out the Kindle should not be allowed to connect to the Internet.

Unfriendly? Perhaps.
But we can't hold everybody's hand for every possible special condition, the directions would take many pages.
