open books failure to add new book

I am encountering a problem with "open books" and encrypted epubs on my linux mint system. I originally thought this a problem with the DeDRM plugin, but that has been proven to be functioning properly. When I attempt to add such a book I get:

calibre, version 2.63.0
ERROR: Cannot add books: Failed to add some books, click "Show details" for more information.

Worker process crashed while executing job
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "site-packages/calibre/utils/ipc/pool.py", line 103, in recv
File "site-packages/calibre/utils/ipc/__init__.py", line 19, in eintr_retry_call
EOFError

A debug mode log shows the following startup information:

calibre Debug log
calibre 2.63 embedded-python: True is64bit: True
Linux-3.13.0-24-generic-x86_64-with-debian-jessie-sid Linux ('64bit', 'ELF')

Python 2.7.9
Linux: ('debian', 'jessie/sid', '')
Successfully initialized third party plugins: DeDRM (6, 4, 3) && Inept Epub DeDRM (0, 1, 7) && Hyphenate This! (0, 0, 8)
Starting up...
Started up in 10.49 seconds with 76 books

The debug log does NOT show the earlier posted pop-up error, only the successful use of the DeDRM plugin for the book.

How do I determine the cause of this problem and correct it?
