I haven't read any other Huston books but that is the same character. "Caught Stealing" starts out with him in his early 20's working as a bartender in NYC. Two guys come in and order drinks then beat him up so bad he losses a kidney as a result. Rest of the book is equally violent. Oh and he dos mention his parents back in California.

I don't plan to read any more of his.
