it worked this time. maybe as pdurrant suggested, my device had not yet been notified that i removed the special offers.
today when i first tried, the kindle usb storage would not show up in my mac. i noticed i had not registered the device. once i did that, it did show up as storage. it also showed me a letter that said, "dear developer, this device is no longer registered for testing..." etc. afterward things went smoothly, the screensaver is working, and i upgraded back to 5.8.1. at that point i had to reinstall screensaver again.
but oddly, even if i forgot to register it before, it was showing up as storage.
anyway, happy ending. so i guess japanese model is fine. (I'm using the english interface.)
