If it is still working on windows 7 then it is not totally dead. The problem could be some issues with windows 10.
I am using windows 10 almost a year (I am one of the early adapter...) and I have no problems with kindle and Kobo H2O devices.
I presume it is working stand-alone and you are able to read books on it. Did you try it on different computers with different cables?
