There is no way to do what you want. Just go with the spelling as it is in the books you are reading. There's nothing incorrect about the spelling in the US. So no, they are not common spelling mistakes. They are just not the same spelling as used in AU. Just go with tit and let it be. Don't fret about changes that don't need to be changed.
