I think you won't regret buying the Oasis as it meets the requirements you outline in your first two paragraphs. As far as the battery is concerned, I treat this Kindle the way I've treated all my previous Kindles and I've never run out of battery (and I read a lot.)

I have the walnut brown leather case and it's the nicest case I've had. It has some texture to it (though it isn't a suede leather) and will show dings and scratches, most of which disappear when you rub them with your finger, if you care about dings and scratches. It has an aged patina to it that's very understated. I'm not sure how vigorously you toss items into your carry-bag, but you might take that into consideration.

My only other recommendation, depending on how your feel about fingerprints, is to invest in a skin for the front. I have the black-grained matte one from Decalgirl which completely hides any fingerprints. The bezel which has the page turn buttons is very wide and does attract fingerprints as that is usually how you end up holding the reader.
