There's a new multi-user read/write calibre server in the works (version 3), some of it is accessible today if you download the source. I think it will address the difficulties of having the library on a network device.
Some people do have their calibre libraries on a NAS, but sometimes they have ran into problems and have had to revert, others have failed to get it to work. If you don't have it running on a NAS already, I suggest you keep it local for now and wait for version 3.
