I agree with shalym and HarryT. While I mostly read on my Kindle at home, having all of my books (including those purchased elsewhere) in my Amazon account means that I can pull out my phone any time I find myself out and about with a few minutes to spare and pick up reading right where I left off.

I always leave wi-fi enabled on my Kindle so that I know the last page read is always synced. I still get at least a week of battery life between recharges.

ETA: If you are starting with a book you purchased from Amazon and modifying it and then sending it back to your account, you may want to add something to the title so that you can easily tell your modified version from the original.

ETA2: I don't know how this will work with books containing page numbers. You can't email an APNX file along with the book. It might work if you email a master mobi file with embedded page numbers as produced by kindlegen, but I have never tried that.
