Most ereaders are based on either Android or generic linux, but the UI, reader software, and storefront will all be developed in-house unless you go with a tablet + some open-source thirdparty ereader app. (And yes, there are E-Ink tablets available and marketed for ereading.)
Principles are always good, but unfortunately opportunities are scarce in the ereader world.
