It looks like the OS X version of ADE deletes the LocalStorage file when a book is closed, which is rather strange, because it doesn't do this on the other platforms. IMHO, this is a an ADE OS X bug.
However, as long as the book is open, it's possible to read and write LocalStorage data, which is, of course, of limited use.

Actually I'm really sad about localstorage support. Localstorage could be a real BIG change in ebook design. But the ebook readers support is poor: ADE do not support it on OSX (or, only until the ebook is open, that is a too limited use), Ibooks seems to support it... now. But in the past Apple turned on/off the localstorage support: some year supported it, some year stopped the support. On my Android ebook reader (Onyx M96) Gitden Reader supports it... until you turn off/on the device. Sigh.
