Here's the root of our misunderstanding: what you're (rightly) calling "register", is what I previously phrased as "logging in". Based on your response to my initial post, I thought that registering before downgrade would lead to an unmountable device. Hence my avoidance.

I see now that when you said "logged in", you referred to unlocking a password-protected device, rather than logging into an Amazon account. I hope this clears things up.
