This information might not really help you with your problem, but (1) the paper clip factory reset does not work, since the XCSor installation has replaced the call to the original rcS with a call to their own version. (2) You can not use your device as USB storage, since the USB-OTG kernel does not support that mode. (3) If you have telnet access to your device (but probably you did not set up your device in that way), you can create the file /mnt/onboard/XCSoarData/kobo/start_nickel in order to trigger reinstalling the original kernel and running nickel.

I am not sure whether I understand you correctly. You did take the sd card out of your device and put it into the sd slot of your PC right?
By the way, there was a report that someone managed to boot from the external sd. Maybe you could try this too. See
