For rooting I used Towelroot v1, get it from archive.org. KingoRoot was reported to work multiple times but I don't really trust that one. Cydia Impactor would most likely work too if you have Windows, and it's trustworthy.
Note that Towelroot freezes when you run it, but that's not a problem. Wait for 20 seconds, do a hard reboot, and then you'll have the su binary installed. Next you need to install the Superuser apk ( F-Droid / Google Play) and you're set.
Then you can set up AFWall+ to allow only the apps you want on the internet, and you can also enable logging to see which ones try to get online.
