This week's free download is the 'Allegro Moderato' from Handel's famous Water Music Suite No. 1. It comes from a recent recording by the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin on the Harmonia Mundi label, which was named Recording of the Month in the April issue of BBC Music Magazine.
'The piece's vitality and brilliance of invention shine forth in the strongest and most appealing orchestral colours in this new recording,' writes George Hall. 'The quality of playing is extraordinary, and the ensemble is flawless from a group that has no conductor.'
Handel wrote the Water Music suites in the early 18th century, to be played at royal river parties on the Thames. No original orchestral parts from these performances survive, and nor does Handel's own autograph score, so it's not possible to know exactly what was performed, or when. We do know that on 17 July 1717 Handel may have had as many as 50 instruments on the water for a performance in honour of King George I, who was travelling up the river Thames.
