This has not been my experience at all. The same as your Kindle, mine (both PW2 and Voyage) are almost always in airplane mode--can't remember the last time I turned on the wi-fi. But they have never turned wi-fi on by themselves to download the new firmware. I'm still running firmware version 5.7.4--haven't bothered yet to download updates to 5.8.1. And I updated to 5.7.4 (by downloading the firmware files) quite a while after it was out--neither of my kindles turned on wi-fi spontaneously without my permission.
