Maybe the device is still good. I have an Acer A500 tablet running ICS. There is no upgrade. It's wifi only, and it does not have any social apps on it.
I have manuals, scientific apps, nature apps, and use a very old edition of FB reader. The tablet uses standard USB, so I simply transfer any books downloaded on computer via USB stick. I no longer update any apps since the OS is old. But the apps' databases are still OK.
All the apps are self contained and need no connection. I use the tablet at the telescope.
The inkBOOK I just bought is running 4.2.2. Good enough to read on, and no Google. Also wifi only. I will not own a network tablet or ereader.
