I have observed that my Oasis besides the left to right unevenness in lighting, which i read is common has a slight gradient on the left side (away from the keys). I have uploaded a picture to get an idea;

As you can see from the photo, I just copied a line from the left side and pasted to the right side. You can see the difference between the sides but the most annoying thing for me is the gradient starting from a whiter colour on the top to a more yellowish on the bottom.

Since its my first kindle, is there any required time for the e-ink screens to "settle down"?

For a £270 ereader, do you find this acceptable?
It is completely unacceptable and turns the act of reading into a horrible, unendurable chore. Other people here will try to convince you otherwise (with some quite personal and insulting recommendations), but for me it pretty much destroyed my enjoyment of reading as well as any faith in Amazon that I did or did not have. I have a Kobo H20 with a *perfect* screen that I will take with me to the grave. For me, such screens are a challenge to find. However, I have experienced fantastic screens first time, every time with tablets/phones. I would recommend the galaxy tab s2, with moonreader plus and its blue light filter. Clear as crystal and quite fun.
Happy reading :-)
