Make sure to only use the demo.bin file on the kind of kindle you got it from. If you got it from a kindle paperwhite (2013 edition) make sure to only use it on a (2013 edition) otherwise it will brick your kindle. I tried it and bricked one of mine.

Edit: It is the essence of this post that is to become the DGA-2 jail break method.
Neat trick.
I bet Lab126 never considered that route, which of course is why it works.
This will be of interest to all owners of 5.x firmware touchscreen devices (all Paperwhites and newer models) that missed out on the firmware version 5.6.5 software jailbreak.
For reference, here is the thread where I described some of the useful search bar commands in a typical 'demo' firmware install:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=269245
Further into that same thread, IFixKindles described using those commands to "Un-Demo" a Kindle, starting here:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...29&postcount=6
Now what SKK has done above is the non-obvious route to downgrading a 5.x firmware Kindle -
First, a requirement -
Have access to a Kindle of the same model that is still running that model's "Demo" firmware -
*) Use the commands to export the USB storage (normally disabled in the Demo firmware)
*) Copy the (large) update file used to install the "Demo" firmware.
Now it should be possible to setup a collection point for those update files at a site other than this one, perhaps one of our off-site 'de-bricking image' sites.
That way, the above preparation step could be skipped by most users.
On the Kindle (of the same model) that you want to downgrade, install the factory 'Demo mode' firmware.
Yeah, right! Got that? It isn't something you would normally think of doing.
Most people want to un-demo a Demo model, here we are taking 'consumer model' and turning it into a Demo model.
Now that you have turned your 'normal' Kindle into a 'demo' Kindle, follow IFixKindle's procedure to un-demo it again, only to the desired (probably earlier firmware, most likely 5.6.5 that you can software jailbreak).
Now that your 'normal' Kindle is once again running the 'normal' Kindle 5.6.5 firmware -
Follow the directions in the first post of the software jailbreak thread.
Note:
That thread also has links/pointers to Amazon's 5.6.5 firmware packages for the models that the software jailbreak works on.
Once you have 5.6.5 jailbroken (run both the jb AND the hotfix package) -
You can once again update to one of the newer firmware versions for your model if desired, the jailbreak will survive.
Note:
You can get any prior firmware version from Amazon's download server - that how to is a FGA.
