You are making those attempts while running the 'main' operating system, they only work with the 'diags' operating system (your Kindle is a dual boot machine).
Use telnet (no password required in either system)
and/or
Follow the directions to install public key authentication
and/or
Follow the directions to change the /etc/passwd file entry for 'root' in the 'main' system.
