When I was about 10 I was walking to a friend's house, about half a mile away, and there was this cow at the side of the road, just standing there. (I
think it was a cow... I was too surprised to try to check for gender.) I'd seen cows before, but not without something between me and the bovine in question. I had to pause a long moment to decide what I wanted to do. I eventually crossed to the other side of the road and continued. The cow paid me little mind. I was pretty rattled at the time. I think I had thoughts like "Cows are vegetarians... I don't normally hear about people being attacked by cows... it probably won't want to cross the road... they can't climb trees anyway, right?"
In my current area, we occasionally see cows (bovines, anyway) out wandering around before someone calls their owners to come and get them. They don't particularly spook me anymore.
