I found the site:

with lots of free downloads in PDF. This books (all old, out-of-print) are photographed pages. So, none of the junk you see using OCR programs.

Here is the trick. Somewhere in the middle of the book you see an alert that the page is BLOCKED from free users. You can subscribe for a MONTHLY fee to unlock the page.

I downloaded "Dictionary of Quotations" (1893) and found that alert
almost the middle of the book.

Ah well, we are now warned.
